Leeds United extended their unbeaten run to four games after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex on Saturday.
The Whites made the brighter start and took the lead inside the opening 15 minutes through Jayden Bogle. The full-back reacted quickest in the box to turn the ball home after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ao Tanaka had already threatened the Brighton goal.
Leeds United had chances to add to their advantage before the interval. Calvert-Lewin saw one effort cleared off the line, while James Trafford was also forced into a couple of important saves to ensure Daniel Farke’s side went into half-time ahead.
Brighton were the brighter side in the second half
Brighton came out with much more intent after the break and eventually found their way back into the game. Leeds United briefly thought they had restored their two-goal cushion when Ao Tanaka found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a delay.
The hosts continued to push and eventually levelled through Luka Vuskovic in the 71st minute. The defender found the target with a header at the back post from an inswinging corner, giving Brighton the reward for their growing pressure.
Although Brighton dominated more of the ball as the second half progressed, Leeds were able to withstand the late pressure and leave with a point.
The hosts finished with more shots, more efforts on target and more touches inside the Leeds penalty area. Still, Farke’s side could count themselves slightly unfortunate not to take all three points given the quality of some of their opportunities.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in particular, will feel he could have made more of two promising chances. On both occasions he managed to get behind the Brighton defence, although only one attack was eventually flagged for offside.
Gudmundsson and Tanaka make their mark
There were also plenty of positives for Leeds beyond the result. Gabriel Gudmundsson made his first appearance of the season after recovering from a hamstring problem that had kept him out since pre-season.
The Sweden international went straight into the starting XI and produced an excellent performance on his return. He had previously been named among the substitutes against Brentford but wasn’t given minutes by Daniel Farke. Today was different and he showed exactly why he is one of the most important players for Daniel Farke.
Ao Tanaka was another standout performer. One of three changes made by Farke from the previous weekend, the midfielder had initially found himself further down the pecking order following a pre-season where others had impressed.
After coming off the bench against Brentford to give Leeds greater control and composure in midfield, Tanaka was handed a start at Brighton and responded with an energetic display.
For all the late pressure, Leeds showed enough resilience to protect their point. The result leaves them with five points from their opening three Premier League games, keeping their unbeaten beginning to the campaign intact.
There will be some frustration over the missed opportunities, but taking a point away from home against a dangerous Brighton side remains an encouraging outcome.
