Leeds United produced their most impressive performance of the new Premier League season as they stormed past Newcastle United with a 4-1 victory at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke’s side were in complete control for much of the contest, racing into a three-goal lead before half-time. Noah Okafor then added a spectacular fourth after the break to send the home support into raptures.
The Whites started brightly and created several openings before finally breaking the deadlock. Ethan Ampadu almost found the top corner with a powerful effort from distance, only for the ball to hit Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
James Justin then kept a deep cross alive before Jayden Bogle produced an ingenious flick that forced a save from Lukas Hornicek. Bogle went close again moments later, seeing his half-volley pushed away by the Newcastle goalkeeper.
The pressure finally told when Okafor led a rapid counter down the left and found Ao Tanaka. The midfielder drove a fierce effort towards goal, with a deflection off Lewis Miley taking it beyond Hornicek and into the far corner.
Leeds United run riot before half-time
The second goal arrived soon after. Justin delivered into the area and Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet it. The ball, however, took a touch off Bogle before finding the net, meaning the full-back ultimately claimed the goal.
Newcastle nearly reduced the deficit, but Tarik Muharemovic was on hand to block Harvey Barnes. At the other end, Hornícek denied Calvert-Lewin with another sharp intervention.
Leeds eventually got their third just before the interval. Bogle’s pass across the pitch was flicked on by Anton Stach, allowing Calvert-Lewin to turn away from his marker and finish from close range.
The Whites returned after the break with no changes and immediately pushed for more. Gabriel Gudmundsson nearly caught Hornícek out with a dangerous cross, while Stach later stole possession inside the box and almost chipped the goalkeeper.
The fourth goal arrived on the hour mark, and it was worth the wait. A set-piece was headed back towards the edge of the penalty area, where Okafor was waiting. The Swiss forward unleashed a stunning half-volley that flew into the corner.
Elland Road celebrates another Leeds statement
The goal sparked wild scenes inside Elland Road, with supporters loudly singing “United are back” as Leeds continued their dominant display.
Farke then used his bench, introducing Brenden Aaronson and Harry Wilson for Tanaka and Okafor. Melvin Bard also made his Elland Road debut after replacing Gudmundsson.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Calvert-Lewin received a standing ovation as he made way for Lukas Nmecha. The forward had played a central role in Leeds’ comfortable victory.
Nmecha nearly added a fifth when he stretched to reach Daniel James’ cross, but couldn’t make the connection. Newcastle eventually found a consolation through Bazoumana Touré.
Leeds still had chances late on. Wilson’s free-kick was headed back across goal by an unmarked Nico Elvedi, while James later drove forward before firing over the bar.
The final whistle confirmed an emphatic night for Leeds, who made a major statement with four goals against Newcastle and continued their unbeaten Premier League start, climbing to 3rd in the Premier League.
