James Trafford has made an immediate impression at Leeds United. Leeds supporters voted the new goalkeeper their Player of the Match after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
The 23-year-old marked his competitive debut with a clean sheet at the City Ground as Daniel Farke’s side opened their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with victory. Anton Stach’s late free-kick settled a tight game for Leeds, but it was James Trafford who played an even important role to make sure Forest couldn’t find a way back into the game.
The England international, who arrived from Manchester City during the summer, completed the full 90 minutes on his debut and put in a solid performance.
James Trafford delivers when Leeds United need him
It wasn’t an easy afternoon for Leeds. The visitors had to defend for spells and remain disciplined in a noisy City Ground atmosphere. Trafford did exactly that, making three saves and keeping Forest off from scoring.
Speaking after the game, Trafford was clearly delighted with the way his first competitive appearance had gone.
“It is a brilliant start to the season for us all,” the England international began. “To win 1-0 coming here with their new manager, the City Ground is always bouncing, let alone for the first game of the season, so yeah, it is a brilliant result for us.”
Despite not being constantly busy, Trafford knew he couldn’t switch off.
“I always had to stay switched on but it was a lot of fun out there. I enjoyed the game, it was brilliant. But yeah, I just had to stay switched on and when I was called upon, I had to be ready.”
That confidence was also clear when he reflected on Leeds’ chances of claiming the win. Trafford felt the team always possessed enough attacking threat to find a key moment.
“I always believed that we were going to win because of the nature of how we are as a team. We can score from anything; we are a real threat when we get dead balls, when we get the ball wide, when we get the ball in the middle.”
Farke and Ampadu impressed by new arrivals
Trafford wasn’t the only newcomer to catch the eye. Farke was pleased with the way his new players handled debuts for Leeds United.
“Very happy because they have big boots to fill. James Trafford is a good player, but he hasn’t played that many Premier League games, Tarik too. So they both shined and showed why we agreed to sign them, but the whole group was excellent today,” Daniel Farke said while talking to BBC.
Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu also highlighted the immediate impact of the new arrivals, including Trafford and Harry Wilson.
“From the very first minute they walked in the build they have shown their quality. They have shown why they have been brought in to try and help us get to the next level. They’ve shown that hunger and drive to take Leeds to a better place, so that has been very good. They’ve settled in very well.”
Leeds leave Nottingham with three points and a clean sheet, while their new No.1 has wasted no time showing why the club brought him in.
