He was there because Daniel Farke tore his side up for the third round. The Yorkshire Evening Post confirmed eight changes to the team that drew at Brighton, with debuts handed to goalkeeper Michael Zetterer and loan left-back Melvin Bard. Muharemovic lined up in central defence alongside James Justin and Jaka Bijol, and for an hour the whole gamble looked like a masterstroke. In its player ratings, the YEP gave Muharemovic a 7 — the highest Leeds mark it recorded — writing that he “rose brilliantly to head home the opener at the back post” and “sprayed a couple of lovely passes out to James”, while conceding he “couldn’t arrest the slump as Chelsea came flying out in the second half”. Bijol was marked down to a 5 for being caught out of position, with Justin and Zetterer each given a 6.
Why this mattered more than a cup exit
Muharemovic did not arrive quietly. The £34m Leeds paid Sassuolo for him is the second-largest fee the club has confirmed in a seven-signing summer, behind only the £45m spent on James Trafford. Fees like that come with an expectation that a player becomes a fixture rather than a rotation option, and circumstances have accelerated the timetable.
Joe Rodon has been out since pulling up in the 1-1 draw with Brentford on 30 August. He missed the trip to Brighton, and the YEP described the problem earlier this week as a serious hamstring injury — there is no club timescale attached to it, and the reporting on his absence sits here. The Premier League is where he will be judged
Nobody at Elland Road will pretend the second half was acceptable. A defence that had conceded twice in its opening four competitive games shipped six in one evening, and Farke has a dressing room to pick up before Crystal Palace visit. But the Whites still have five points from three league games, a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest among them, and the league table is the only scoreboard that decides this season.
For Muharemovic personally, the ledger reads: a goal, the best rating on the pitch in white, and a scoreline he had almost no hand in. That is an odd night’s work, but it is a long way from a bad one.
