Barcelona vs Feyenoord opens Hansi Flick’s Champions League campaign at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday evening, and the Blaugrana could hardly be arriving in better condition. Four league games, four wins, 17 goals scored — the third-highest total the club has ever managed at this stage of a season, per FC Barcelona’s own records — and a 5-0 dismantling of Valencia at Mestalla still fresh in the memory.
Europe is the one prize this squad has not touched under Flick, and it begins against a Dutch side with more Barça history than most.
Barcelona vs Feyenoord: kick-off time and referee
The match kicks off at 18:45 CEST on Wednesday 9 September — 17:45 UK time — at the Spotify Camp Nou, in the early slot of the Champions League league-phase opener. Spanish coverage is on Movistar Liga de Campeones.
UEFA confirmed on Monday that German official Sven Jablonski, 36, will take the game, with compatriot Bastian Dankert on VAR. Per Mundo Deportivo, it is Jablonski’s first European appointment of the season, his first time refereeing Barcelona in Europe and his first match at the Camp Nou. His only previous involvement with a Spanish club came last season, in Villarreal’s 1-0 home defeat by Pafos.
Team news: Eric Garcia out, Gavi and Bisiwu available
The one certain absentee is Eric Garcia. The defender took a heavy blow to the face from team-mate Rodri at Mestalla and was substituted before the half-hour, but he trained normally on Monday wearing a protective mask. He is unavailable for Feyenoord regardless: as Barca Blaugranes notes, he serves a suspension carried over from his red card in last season’s European elimination against Atlético Madrid, and is instead expected back for Levante at the weekend.
Gavi is fit and back in the picture. The 22-year-old missed the home wins over Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano with knee discomfort picked up on the opening day, returned to the bench at Valencia without playing, and is now considered a rotation option from Wednesday onwards — roughly the timeline Barcelona set for his return.
Jesse Bisiwu is also available after the thigh injury that saw him stretchered off in the Copa Catalunya was diagnosed as nothing more than a contusion. He rejoined first-team training on Monday and is on Barcelona’s Champions League List A wearing No.27. Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji remain long-term absentees.
There is a nice sub-plot for three of Flick’s youngest players. Bisiwu, Hamza Abdelkarim and Brian Fariñas are the only members of the squad yet to play in the Champions League, and all three will wear UEFA’s new commemorative Debut Patch if they get on. Hamza and Bisiwu are registered on List A, Fariñas on List B as a homegrown player.
Predicted Barcelona line-up
Barca Blaugranes expect a strong side rather than heavy rotation, given how comfortable Sunday’s second half was. Their projected XI: Joan Garcia in goal; Jules Koundé at right-back with Pau Cubarsí and Andreas Christensen in the middle and João Cancelo, who did not feature at Mestalla, coming in for his first start at left-back in place of the ever-present Xavi Espart; Rodri, Pedri and Fermin Lopez in midfield; and the untouchable front three of Lamine Yamal, captain Raphinha and Anthony Gordon.
The numbers behind that attack are absurd. Raphinha has scored in all four league games. Lamine Yamal produced his best display of the season at Mestalla with a second consecutive brace. Gordon picked up a fourth assist in four games, already double his tally from his last Premier League campaign. And Fermin, kept out of the World Cup by injury, has four goals and two assists in four matches.
Feyenoord bring two familiar faces — and a rescued winger
Feyenoord are coached by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who won a league title and a Champions League at Barcelona, and their defence includes Mika Mármol, the 25-year-old left-footed centre-back who came through La Masia before leaving for Andorra five years ago.
Rotterdam also arrive with an unlikely selection option. Winger Anis Hadj Moussa refused to play last weekend in an attempt to force through a €40m-plus-€4m move to Al-Ittihad, only for the Saudi club to miss the deadline for the required bank guarantee. He explained himself to Van Bronckhorst and the dressing room on Monday, trained, and could feature at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona know their full list of Champions League opponents already, and this is the gentlest-looking of them on paper. Flick’s record suggests he will treat it as nothing of the sort.
